Jennifer Hudson engaged to VH1's 'Punk': Proposal took place Friday, on J-Hud's 27th birthday

H'wood Falls In Love - Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson had a dreamy 27th birthday -- her boyfriend, "I Love New York 2" participant David Otunga proposed to her, her rep confirmed to People magazine. The "Dreamgirls" star is preparing for a busy fall with a new self-titled album (her first since competing on "American Idol") and new film, "The Secret Life of Bees." Most recently, Hudson played Carrie's assistant in "Sex and the City," who gets engaged to a hometown sweetheart in the film. After a courtship of less than a year, Jennifer Hudson is engaged to marry her boyfriend David Otunga, better known to VH1 viewers as "Punk" from the second season of "I Love New York."

The 27-year-old Harvard Law School grad was in Los Angeles with J-Hud Friday night to celebrate her 28th birthday when he popped the question with a Neil Lane diamond ring, according to reports.

The VH1 reality star Tiffany "New York" Pollard christened Otunga with the nickname Punk during her show's second season in late 2007. He was a finalist on the show, but lost his chance at love with Pollard to winner Ezra "Buddha" Masters.

Otunga has worked with the Rev. Jesse Jackson's Rainbow PUSH Coalition. He and Hudson are both from Chicago.
